In a devastated east African village, Racdair, the blind leader of that village, awaits the birth of a white elephant. This elephant is the Masaiah, a mystical benefactor born to these people every 200 years. As the creature enters the world amid a blazing white fire, a young man in Atlanta, Georgia is experiencing a dream in which he is speaking and singing in a foreign language. The young man, David Lockley, was born with the ability to hear the thoughts of others. Tormented by the psychic noise as a child, David’s mind is saved by Chanrille, a gentle elephant at a local zoo.
At the same time in Washington, DC, Marcus Dawson’s electronics company is desperately seeking a mineral that is needed to fuel a new weapon. A satellite scan reveals a substantial deposit of the mineral in the African village where Marcus was born over 200 years before. Marcus knows what this means. The discovery of the deposit miraculously coincides with the birth of the Mašíah. As the project and personal problems weigh heavily on Marcus’ mind, he must also deal with the news that his vice president, Martin Devilin, is a traitor. Martin stole the plans for the weapon and has possibly discovered the secret of how Marcus has lived for so long.
Martin has not only learned Marcus’ secret, but has hired a band of mercenaries to aid him in taking the heart of the Mašíah so that he, too, might live 200 years. His attempt to unveil the Marcus’ secret, however, results in the release of a creature held captive for over a thousand years. The creature imbues Devilin with incredible power. Now the new Devilin creature sets out for the village, capable of destroying anyone and anything that tries to stop him.
Meanwhile, the Lockley family secrets are revealed. The family huddles in Daniel’s office and explores the psychic abilities that are shared by mother and son, the relationship David has with Chanrille, and the possibilities their powers present. They are still marveling at the new knowledge as they leave the zoo, well after closing time. As David and Emma exit down a dark hallway, Daniel is attacked. Daniel and David fight off the attacker, but when the family returns home, they find their apartment has been thoroughly ransacked. Daniel thinks his unknown employer is behind the attacks. Using a cell phone he received from the mystery man, Daniel calls and threatens to reveal everything to the police. Almost immediately, the phone starts to emit a high-pitched whine. The family barely escapes the apartment before the phone explodes.
Emma and Daniel sustain only minor injuries, but David has a concussion. While in the hospital, he falls into a coma. Emma calls on her dead mother, Sara, to help her son. Sara discovers that Daniel is a “dream walker”, someone that can enter the mind of others. It takes the combined efforts of Sara, Chanrille, Emma, Daniel, and an assist from Racdair – David’s great-great grandfather, to reach David’s mind and guide him back to consciousness.
Marcus, aware of the explosion, flies to Atlanta. In the ensuing 24-hours, Marcus, the Lockley’s, Sara, Chanrille, and Racdair unravel the complete story behind their gifts and the menace of the “heart eater”, the person who devoured the heart of a Mašíah 200 years ago. This person, evil and powerful, framed Marcus for the heinous crime and may be seeking to claim another heart that would give him another 200 years.
Racdair and Chanrille tell the others of the prophecy of “the cursed, blind and the promised ones”. While attempting to interpret the meaning of the prophecy, Daniel convinces David to reveal all his powers – telepathy, telekinesis, teleportation and, unknown even to him, cellular regeneration. In the end, David is forced to acknowledge that he is probably “the promised one”.
Daniel and Marcus, however, determine that there is more than one threat. The prophecy foretells a coming darkness, but there is an immediate threat from Devilin, now poised to attack the village. Marcus knows he must go and help defend his people. With psychic training from David and some combat training from Daniel, Marcus attempts to teleport to the village to confront his nemesis. Devilin, however, is prepared and traps Marcus in limbo, leaving him helpless between time and place.
David and Daniel successfully arrive in the village, but David is too weak to fight, his powers useless. Utilizing his military training, Daniel kills several of the mercenaries, but he is eventually captured. Devilin’s men also locate David’s hiding place, and they are both brought before the Devilin creature as prisoners.
Racdair confronts Gothan, the creature possessing Devilin’s body. Gothan, in a fit of rage, reveals the secret of the Mašíah. He is threatening to destroy Racdair and his Mašíah when Marcus arrives. Marcus ignores Devilin/Gothan, infuriating the creature to the point of madness. The creature attacks, but Marcus beats him soundly. The creature makes a final attempt to escape by possessing Daniel, but the mind of a “walker” is not easily taken, and Daniel seals Gothan back in the stone prison from which he'd escaped. The three: Grandfather, Father, and Son, then shatter the creature to atoms.
With the battle over, Marcus leaves men to restore the village and invites his old friend, Racdair, to come back to America for a long visit.
