Racdair is the spiritual leader of a poor African village in east Africa. As Miandai, Racdair is the keeper and protector of a white elephantine creature called the Mašíah, the mystical benefactor of the village. The Mašíah is in danger from an evil that would destroy the world, and Racdair must face and conquer his fears in order to join with the creature that he is honor-bound to protect.
